Keeping your baby and young children safe over the Christmas holidays

Swallowing button batteries can injury or kill a childA new webpage has been launched to provide festive season safety advice to families including tips about button batteries, fire, alcohol, choking and toys.

The advice includes reminders to:

  • keep alcohol out of reach as even small amounts can poison young children. After a party, empty any alcohol out of glasses. Children could drink the remains if they get up early to play with their toys.
  • keep candles away from children and blow out before going to bed.
  • keep glass and fragile decorations out of the reach of toddlers and remember to keep small trinkets from Christmas crackers away from small children.
  • keep batteries well out of children’s reach, in a sealed container. If swallowed, a button or coin battery, even flat batteries, can produce a dangerous chemical reaction, which can burn through tissues and be fatal.
