The Inclusion Health Team in collaboration with Surrey County Council hosted its first Community Kitchen Session on 4 July 2023 at a local church in Epsom.
The Community Kitchen Project aims to enhance the mental wellbeing of Asylum-Seekers residing in Surrey by offering them the opportunity to cook their own meal and share their experience with peers.
The response to the event was truly remarkable, reaching a maximum capacity of 25 participants who came together to enjoy a communal meal.
Abbie Mills, Community Engagement Officer supported the event and said, “It was an incredible session and we were fortunate to have a mother and daughter duo seeking asylum from Iraq as our chefs.
“They skilfully prepared a traditional dish from their homeland called ‘Bamye’ along with a flavourful Chicken Biriyani.
“Thanks to the generous support of the local church and a dedicated volunteer who teaches English to the Asylum-Seeking population in the local area.”
As the session concluded, all attendees expressed immense gratitude for the chance to sit down and savour a home-cooked meal together.
A second session is due to take place in a months’ time.
